There are three different formats for DVD recording (think VHS/Betamax):
DVD-R/RW
DVD+R/RW
DVD-RAM
Most will support the first two, only the best will support DVD-RAM. With DVD-RAM you can do what is called "timeslip" - watch a program which is still recording, or "pause" live TV.0 -
Also, Richer Sounds (https://www.richersounds.com) is a good place for these - they often get top names at good prices (certainly much lower than the supermarkets), also https://www.empiredirect.co.uk
I would recommend this one:

Think of DVD-RAM as similar to the hard drive on your computer, with ability to 'multi-task'(For instance, whilst recording a programme on a DVD-Ram disc, you can be recording another on the same disc at the same time) and portability.
DVD-R/DVD+R as one time recording media and DVD-RW/DVD+RW as erasable recording media.0
