Used car mileage query

Hi everyone :wave:

Just a quick question. A friend of mine has been looking at a car which is for sale privately in the area. When he ran the check with the RAC, they said that the mileage he'd entered into their system was inconsistent with the data that they held on it. The clock says 39,000 - the registered mileage was 50,400 ish in 2006 (car is 2002) according to the RAC database.

Does anyone have any idea how this could happen? It doesn't sound good to me, but I know very little about these sorts of things

Two ways:

1) It has gone right round the clock and started again from zero.

2) The mileometer has been tampered with to make it look as though it's done less miles.

You need to check where the RAC get their mileage info. from? Is it reputable?
Does the car have a service history? Does the service history stack up with the miles on the odometer?
Personally I think I would pass on this motor and go and look for another one. It's a buyers market out there at the moment too.

Does the car had its old MOT certificates? what do these show?

Hi guys, thanks for all the responses, I've suggested he look elsewhere. The car only has a service history for the last owner (they've had it two years), prior to that there is nothing at all. I guess as he's only intending on keeping it for a couple of years, he would have the same problems selling it on.

You could get the V5 serial number and do a check on the MOT info site.

Pring off the MOT history and it will have the dates and mileages of the previous MOT's...
