How do I stop this getting onto my system? I use AVG and it says that I am protected against such things, but I have had it twice this week. I downloaded malware to get rid of it.
I downloaded Adware today to try and stop it from happening a 3rd time but the free edition was not enough.
Any ideas?

You need to install a decent antivirus and firewall, only install one not both.

Its more than likely a website your going onto. If you have AVG, then I recommend using the Internet Explorer toolbar it comes with.
Also, uninstall Java from your system and install the latest version, there are exploits in old versions that programs like this use to infect your sysem.
THIS is an excelent tutorial and I suggest giving it a read.Rules, Rules, Rules .....0 -
I've followed all the instructions and I am still getting the pop-up. Even if you say no or hit the X to close it, it downloads all the !!!! onto your computer. So I have to do control-alt-delete to close the window and it ends up closing all the windows I have open (usually 2 or 3 at a time) It has happened about 6 times today and I have only had the laptop on for about 2 hours tops. Any other ideas? I have done an up to date AVG virus check and Malware scan.0

I have read many sites about this tonight, and one of the last comments on this page http://swoofware.com/blog/2008/06/29/xp-antivirus-2008-and-antivirus-2009-are-evil/ says the best thing to do is a system restore. I have no idea how to do this and even with instructions I would not feel confident in doing it.0

Whilst it's not great, Windows Defender is free and runs real-time so could afford the extra protection you need.

out of interest for anyone finding this thread, this WILL remove this
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2- Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
- Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
- When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
- When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
- Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
- Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
- Then click Finish.
- MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
- If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
- On the Scanner tab:
- Make sure the "Perform Quick Acan" option is selected.
- Then click on the Scan button.
- The next screen will ask you to select the drives to scan. Leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
- The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
- When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
- Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
- Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
- Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
- When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
- The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
- Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
