Hi i had a loan for a vehicle back in 1992 roughly, the garage i bought the vehicle from went bust, and I moved away and had a couple of debt letters re the payments. I contacted one company once and agreed to pay something, paid 2 installments i think and then couldnt afford to anymore. I then never heard anything from anyone for years, suddenly i have received a letter at my current address saying they want £3,700 from me by 21st August. Is this debt not cleared after 6 years of no payment? How have they got my address details? Can you tell me do I have to contact them or just ignore the letter? Sorry I am based in Uk. So would like to know where I stand legally.
I have now received a letter from Scotcall saying they are sending a debt collector round to the flat. I really dont understand why they are doing this?
I look forward to hearing back from you

Debt are not cleared or written off after 6 years of no contact from the creditor, but they can become legally unenforceable.
From a previous thread:A debt will be "Statute Barred" if there has been no acknowledgement of the debt by you making a payment or in writing within the relevant limitation period.
If you are in England/Wales then the limitation period is 6 years and you should read:
Link: Factsheet | Liability for Debts and the Limitation Act (England/Wales)
If you are in Scotland then the limitation period is 5 years and you should read:
Link: Factsheet | Liability for debts & the Prescription & Limitation (Scotland) Act 1973
If you feel the debt is "Statute Barred", then there is a letter to write at the end of each factsheet.
