Cyberhome DVD Recorder 1600 me

Bought this today at Asda - according to the threads on shop don't drop, it plays divx disc but I am stumped - any tips would be most gratefully welcomed? Not sure if I need to hack it for that...... Also it did not recognise the +dvd I put it to record with - says + on the box.

One scart to tv, connect sky+ via the second scart socket.
It does play divx - I have found some avi files it won't play but they are the same files my old divx player didn't like as well.
Not sure about the + disk though. I tried a -r and it prompted me to format it straight away. Could be just some brands of disc it doesn't like.0 -
