it didnt work out as my step father didnt want to - simple! he only has a few years left on the mortgage and didnt want to extend it at all.

I am a marketing account manager for a newspaper in Berkshrire.
I will be earning a basic of at least 18k, with ote of 30k.
At this point I have not apprached anyone - are there people I should contact?
    An SOA?!
I did the quick credit check yesterday and was told it was "average" - I have no credit cards, no store cards, I had a loan that I have already settled 3 years before it was due to end.
At the moment I have a basic of 15k with a ote of 25k.

    Many thanks

You haven't answered why you can't work whilst your travelling?

A lot of people say that this is one of the best parts to travelling, working with others, making friends and experiencing other peoples cultures first hand by living / spending time with people. You can work in Australia on a working holiday visa, you can probably work on shorter visas but I'm not sure.

You will struggle in the states.

Also, what are you expecting to spend £9k on if all your flights are booked and some of your accomodation?

Your accomodation should be hostels which are ultra cheap, if you find a bad one then move to another one, its the easiest thing to do. Theres a lot of good hostels out there.

    America, Canada, New Zealand, Australia???

If you want to see different cultures and travel on the cheap, wouldn't you do better to not spend a large amount of time in expensive westernised cultures similar to the one you already live in?

On 15k you may well struggle to get a 9k loan .. on 30k you may be alright
I would suggest you try your own bank first as they will know how you handle your current a/c.

I would strongly suggest you get a CC too... partly as a very useful backup but also because it's very very difficult to hire a car in many countries without a CC.

I assume you have already opened a Nationwide a/c to take advantage of their fee free foreign exchange facilty

Any loan institute that would even consider you for a sum of this size is going to want to see a cast iron guarantee that you have a well salaried job at the end of the travelling time. Do you have this in writing? It seems like an awfully good offer! Presumeably offered as a sabatical?

I do not want the money to party with. I am going to use it to experience life, see lanmardks, learn about different cultures and become a better person. The world is alot larger than England. Life is not about money although it is needed to do almost anything! With regards to a job - I have one waiting for me for the day I return, I have been wokring since I have left school and think its about time for me to see the world.

What would you suggest then? I am leaving so staying is not an option.

U can always try one of those buy now pay 6 in months time , if that gives u enough time to travel ?

Can I make a suggestion? I think you would be best getting an MBNA credit card - It is 0% for 13 months and you can get the money balance transfered into your bank account.

The best thing about this card for you is that while the card is on the 0% you only have to pay back £25 per month no matter how much you borrow.

MBNA usually give quite good credit limits too - just a word of advice though DO NOT USE THE CARD when you have a balance transfer on it otherwise you will have to start paying interest on your spends.

I did the same thing many years ago, got a home improvement loan on my property for 8-9k as I was still employed so no problem as they did not know I was planning on leaving (you could say its for a car loan?). My travel ticket was around £1200 and I left a bit in the bank back home to cover the D/Debit payments on things etc. I say grab the opportunity whilst you can by whatever means (not robbing a bank of course) you can pay things off eventually when your employable again on your return, I mean who wants to work & waste time stuck in one place for too long when your travelling. Good luck....you'll have a wicked time :T
  • hi i'm just finishing my 7 month travels and 8-9k may cover it depending on how long you are spending in New Zealand, OZ, Canada and Hong Kong and not working. They are very expensive compared to other parts of Asia.
Be prepared to spend 10- 15 pounds a night for a dorm 7days a week, long distance transport is not cheap in Oz or New Zealand at all, food and drink as for more expensive in Oz or New Zealand than England due to the droughts they've had and DON'T rely on the "lonely planet" for costings everything has gone uploads in the last 7 months with fuel and energy costs, let alone world crop prices.
I had to work in Oz and borrow from family other wise I'd be flying back early so please don't go mad on spending especially in western/ised countries it will hit you hard.
Enjoy yourself but by no means is it cheap anymore, unless you just went to places like Thailand,Bali, Cambodia etc.

good luck with the loan but i'd quit going out and cut spending in every way till you go. Save as much of your own money as you can and don't take your mobile unless you can change it to pay as you go.
It's good to travel and its the best thing I've ever done and experienced, ignore the people on here who just think you are going to party they obviously can't believe people want to do something else with their lives other than the daily grind!
