Emmsa - you do need to know this, though. If you buy an ipod you can't use most (legal) sites other than iTunes to download music from, although you can still transfer over tunes from CDs. This is because ipod don't handle encrypted (DRM) Windows Media Audio (WMA) files.

Personally I consider ipods to be over-hyped & over-priced. I bet most people's 20Gb ipods are just about empty. (cue lots of people telling me otherwise... but 20Gb is about 6000 or more tracks and not many people spend that much on music!) Sound quality is limited by the compression technology, so even the most expensive is not as good as a reasonable CD player anyway.

I'd agree about the ipod being overhyped. Rio do some excellent players, as do Creative. I've got a 30gb Creative zen jukebox extra that's about 1/2 full, I've put over 250 cds on it so far. It's quite bulky but it does have my entire cd collection on it :)

    Ipod overated?

Like i say in previous post. Mine costs (with card) £18. Smaller than an ipod, holds a couple of hours of music ( exactly how long do you intend jogging/ sitting on the bus) , batteries last 10 hours and only cost 20p to replace , not likely to get mugged for it . Also acts as a SD card reader .

All my collection ( 20gb all named) are mp3 so why worry about other formats, although it may play them too but never tried.

My advice, chuck 20 quid at one, in the worse case send it to someone for chrimbo if you dont like it .
ps anyone wanna swap Mp3s ( possibly dvd discs) send me a pm
On the internet you can be anything you want. It`s strange so many people choose to be rude and stupid.

My husband who rarely listens to music or watches anything but footy is getting Apple ipod 30GB that holds photos, he is even contemplating getting a video one. He always wants the top of the range, regardless of how much use he will get from it.
Tell him to have a look at Archos! I've had one for a couple of years - excellent quality video - I have the little matchbox-size recorder which attaches to it and you can record stuff from TV, digibox, etc - I believe <ahem> it's also possible to record copies of your commercial dvds which shouldn't be possible! -

Also photos, mp3s, voice recorder, portable hard disk so you can move large files around. Play back via device itself, TV, stereo, etc.- https://www.archos.com.

    Thanks for your post Macca64
It's all getting to technical for me. I didn't understand a word you said.
    But thanks anyway.

    Didn't mean to confuse..

Try having a look on MP3.com, they have lots of reviews of players, although I think they are US based. They also have details on the different formats etc that I mentioned in my post.
