Mobile broadband - faster than land broadband?

Options
We have awfully slow broadband, only ever gets upto about 0.5mbps as we are 8 miles from the exchange. Would the mobile broadband dongles you can get give us a faster speed?

mobile broadband may theoretically be faster, but there is more latency when it comes to requesting a web page and it appearing on your screen..

i'm a fair distance from my exchange, and according to BT, i'm only supposed to get a 512 connection..

a faceplate filter later, a change of provider to sky's ADSL2+ service, and i get 2mb.. so you can get faster....

I am away from the exchange too and do not get a great signal from sky's package too so I opt for the mobile broadband but have had no problems.

To see how good the signal would be when choosing a providers look at mobile handsets. If the signal is strong it's a fair indication of what the dongle signal will be and how fast the internet is. I am on a Tmobile data card and in some instances it is faster than many so called 2meg lines.

Mobile broadband will only be faster if you can get the "Turbo" speeds which will give you around 1.5Mbps and the coverage for this tends to be along major road routes (motorways, major dual carriageways such as A1) and larger cities. If not, you'll be on the standard rate of around 350kbps which is slower than you get now.

If you are on adsl can you post your SNR and Attenuation, we may be able to advise what to do. Also are you on your main telephone socket and are there any other sockets or leads on the line?

There's always the old "disconnect the bell ring wire" (the one that goes to number "3" terminal on the socket) trick.
