Dusk till Dawn Security Lights

When we bought our house some 18 months ago the previous owners had fitted 4 lights aboove the garage and porch.
They came on at night and went off when light in the morning.
I think these are a great idea when returning home from work in the dark evenings and when we have visitors at night.
They worked fine for about 2 weeks, then they stopped all of a sudden !
Went into the garage loft and tightened the connections etc. They work from a switch inside the garage so they can be on or off.
Managed to get 3 to work, then went down to 2, then 1 then 0 !!!
Hasn't concerned me during the summer but now it is short days again can anybody please offer any advice.
Many thanks

Maybe bulbs need replacing? If they were all fitted at the same time you'd expect the bulbs to die at about the same time.
I'd start by replacing one bulb and see if that helps.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Is it the bulbs or switches that are photo sensitive ie dusk till dawn?
Follow his link Here for economical security lamps. Built in sensor to switch lamp on automatically at night fall and off again at sunrise.15000 hour lamp life .
You could save money though with PIR lights that only come on when something activates the sensor go here.
I just did a quick search there are other options available depends what you want
Hope that helps...roll on summerI run because I like BEER.....0 -
Does anyone else find that PIR security lights keep coming on and off on a windy night? Mine does - and then the bulb seems to blow. It's 150 watt, so that could be hard on the electric. There are no bushes or trees that would cause it to come on by movement.
I am thinking of replacing mine with an on at dusk/off at daylight low energy bulb.
Next door seems to have the same problem. They have two, a big 300 or 500 and a smaller one. They keep coming on and lighting up my kitchen .... grrr... Then they seem to blow.0 -
The bulbs always used to blow in my outside light. I changed to a low energy bulb and no problems since.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4

first thing I tried was the bulbs and they were ok.
There is a sensor on the garage wall which detects when to switch the lights on.
May get an electrician in anyway to change to PIR as it does tend to shine light into our bedroom. Not a problem until next May when a new addition will be sleeping in our room.0 -
we have problems with powercuts, if theres a loss of power in the evening, even for a few seconds it seems to 'reset' the lights outside and they can sometimes stay on all night or day0

We had problems with dawn to dusk bulbs and changed to low energy bulbs controlled by timers inside the house. No problems since (fingers crossed!). We have an ordinary bulb in a PIR lantern and it has blown twice - literally blown, the top of the bulb has disappeared like the top of a boiled egg! We thought rain might have got into the lantern and dropped on to the hot bulb but it was all watertight. We're thinking about this one.
We also had a low energy bulb on the landing at the top of the stairs. This kept flashing at odd times even though it was switched off at the wall. An electrician checked the switch and the wires but everything was OK. The only answer to this was to go back to an ordinary bulb.0
