Stench Pipe Question

My stench pipe runs up the corner of the bathroom. A standard length bath fits neatly in my bathroom with a few inches to spare. However, this means that I have to cut a small corner out of the bath to miss the stench pipe. Is there any reason why I can't narrow the stench pipe so it doesn't interfere with the bath? I can see that the pipe needs to be large diameter heading down to the sewer, but surely the part that only carries air upwards does not need to be 4" diameter.
Thanks for your help
