Some suggestions for this board (GIOL) and a thank you to everyone

Hi everyone. I've been doing matched betting for about 6 months now, and believe me I found it at just the right time. I'm not quite sure how I would've coped without the money I've made here. I'd have found a way, but this has made things easier. I'm not sure quite how much I made, because my record keeping isn't fantastic, but I think I'm around the 1k mark if you include the amount I made from bingo.

So a big thank you to everyone who's helped me, particularly Lazza with his multimatcher and the people who wrote (and everyone who's pooled knowledge contributed to) the beginners guide and the other guides here. Have a virtual pint on me

I've knocked it on the head for a bit recently mainly because I came into some unexpected money from my university and decided that if I didn't need any more money, my time would be better spent learning and relaxing (and I even went on to do one of those things:rotfl:). Anyway, since I've been away I had a think about the forum and how it could be better. Here are my ideas:

1) The forum could contain a subforum, either for posting no risk bingo offers and other things that can clutter up the board (ironic as I'm posting one), or exclusively for posting new offers from bookies, with the no chat just tips thread stickied at the top, which would leave the main forum free for discussion on more general matched betting points, and bingo offers (can I have some lucky dust please), diaries and the like.

B) More board guide type people (the ones who have the things under their names saying "HI, Martin has asked me to inform blah blah blah".) Specifically aimed at helping the newbies. The reason I think this is that even with the wealth of useful information around here, people still manage to make mistakes.

Mistakes will always happen, sometimes because people push the wrong button, other times because someone lacks the knowledge or skill to acheive their goal. Now, I'm sure people make mistakes on the other boards too, but realistically, what does it matter if you mess up on the competitions board or the Green Fingers Board? Yes, so you won't win that round the world trip or plant weed instead of magnolias, which I'm sure is annoying, but here, on this board, people can do their finances a very great deal of damage in a very short space of time if they don't understand what they're doing. If you were to base the amount of board guides for each board on the consequences of something going wrong, then this board would need loads. I think a few more couldn't hurt.

3) A test for Newbies. It wouldn't be compulsory (how could it be), but just a test of one's own knowledge and could go at the end of the introductory guide. The questions would be based on the basic concepts of matched betting and mistakes newbies most frequently make. For example

Q1) If I want to lay a football team at 15 on betfair for £20, how much do I need to have in my betfair account?
Q2) If a site has a £50SNR offer, how much could I realistically expect to make back?
Q3) If a 100% bonus has a 6xWR for deposit and bonus amount, and I deposit £50, how much would I need to bet to withdraw the money?
etc etc
I'm sure you can all come up with better questions than that.

Anyway, I'm just throwing those out there, so feel free to discuss or tell me I'm crazy.

I personally think this would be a good idea, and would make things neater. I'd even go so far as to suggest that the subforum could possibly benefit from being private. I don't think this would preclude people from 'discovering' matched betting through this forum, but would keep all the offer threads off Google's first page and might mean that some offers are left open a bit longer / loopholes aren't plugged as quick.
    Just my 2p.

I think with the current number of BGs and the people who help here, pretty much most mistakes that are posted up are dealt with so long as there's enough time to do so. If someone leaves it til 2 minutes before the off before posting their problem, we could have 50 BGs here and it won't make a difference if it's not correctable in-play. Most importantly, I think people need to understand they themselves are responsible for their actions. I would worry that having more BGs around with the "helper" status might make people think "a BG will always be there to get me out of my mess!" rather than taking responsibility for their knowledge and actions.

There have been a couple of tests put up at different times, think Fella wrote one if I remember correctly and another user linked to one a while back. Because you sometimes have to think on your feet when something goes slightly wrong, it's not a bad idea to do a test and if it was at the end of the guide then I guess people could see if they had understood some of the concepts at least... mind you, does anyone even read the guide properly anymore?!

Finally, well done on making £1k... and all the best for making more in the future.
After posting about receiving an email to my MSE username/email from 'Money Expert' (note the use of ' '), I am now unable to post on MSE. Such is life.

I think to clear most of the bollox that crops up on here,

    1) anything with a question mark after it should go into 1 thread:
when will these markets settle ? , what bookie next ? etc etc should all be posted in the ask your questions here...

    2) There should be a seperate thread for ; help me I have c0cked up

    3) a seperate sub board / forum or thread or whatever for general chit chat, about ' needing to bust out ' , ' I have been on MSE for 2 days but will make up a diary ' and suchlike .

Ideally the first 2 pages on here should be for the important stuff, such as promotions, opening offers, tips etc

The 'search this forum ' should be bigger, in flashing dayglo letters, as a lot of people don't ever seem to see it or use it :p
Hopefully the people who ask the questions, will also use the little button marked thanks, not too much to ask - manners, especially when you are makng / saving money from advice given. Would be even better if these lurkers would also give something back to the board too...

If all the noobie questions go into one thread, humorous diaries are not allowed, all the offers go into their own sub forum, no-one is allowed to ask a question that has been asked before because of the excellent* search function - what'll go in the main forum?

I suppose we could add some more stickies about how it's important to read all the stickies before even thinking about the reading the offers.

We did enquire about an additional board guide, but the request was turned down. Anyway it's not really part of the role of BGs to answer all questions, that is for board members to do, including those people who also happen to be BGs.

There isn't really a consensus about how the board might be reorganised, really what people want is for the posts that irritate them personally to be moved to a sub forum for irritating posts. From a practical point of view it's irritating enough to have to merge threads on a single board without having to move them from sub forum to sub forum.

and there is this one, the only difference is that the 'Board Guides' decide to untick there signature box, next to the reply button.

    For example, see signature below.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi,

Board guides don't have the control to make subforums or to make significant changes to the way the board is organised.

I'm moving this thread the site feedback and suggestions board for consideration by MSE
