Laptop for a student....

Options
......I am useless at buying computers. I bought a Dell about 4 years ago which I hated from the very first moment I opened it. Unfortunately I borrowed it out at work and it came back broken and I now need to buy a new one after my other one being out of action for 9 months now.

I am going to be viewing TV on the laptop with the occasional movie, I will be looking at pictures, facebook, myspace and the likes. I have about £400 to play with. I want something that will last and that will perform well. Not too much weight involved or too big and bulky yet the keyboard not too small.
I don't want much, lol.

I tried ebuyer but couldn't really find one, there was plenty and I liked the majority but I just want an opinion before I buy!!!

Thanks in advance for your help:j

    What Dell did you have?
DELL's SCI site has a couple of cheep Latops ;) lol!

If you don't play games then take a look at the UMPC's like the Asus Eee PC 1000H. It should cover most of your needs for around the £400 mark.

By the sounds of things the old one would be well within the required spec. if you're only doing the things you list.

You could legally wipe the hard drive and re-install windows XP afresh, which would solve any software issues, the likely cause of the difficulties that made you think it was broken (unless it was actually smashed.) Thus saving you £400 for about an hours effort.

Ooooh no the screen is broken and it's a bit too heavy to cart around. I need to buy one soon. I'm just gonna have to take time out and study what I need and what for.
I don't know where to start. Are price comparison websites any good?

I've just bought one of these for less than £380:

    T7300 2.0GHz CPU (800MHz FSB, 4MB L2 cache) with 2GB RAM

Absolute bargain, I thought, though maybe a bit heavy if you need to move it about often.

Oh, and this web page helps you decode Intel's chip numbers (e.g. T7300) to see what specification each one is made to:

    http://www.intel.com/products/processor_number/chart/core2duo.htm

When buying a laptop, I usually find it easiest to decide which chip you want first, then take it from there.
  • It's a bit over your price range but if you could save up a bit more, a low-end Macbook would probably be more to your fancy. You'll get an educational discount on the Apple store, but it would still be a bit above your £400 budget...
