    I've been Money Tipped!
yes pretty sure students are exempt from council tax look on the council website where your uncle lives. Our local council is very helpful and my daughter who will be a student doesn't have to pay.

you will probably need a letter from the uni to confirm your student status. they will have done this hundreds of times before, so head along to student services after term has started (might be very busy in the first week or so!) and ask them for it.

and just to confirm, you don't count for council tax as a full time university student.
    :happyhear
  • all you need is a council tax exemption letter from your uni, which you will be able to pick up in freshers week, then your uncle will be able to send this onto the local authoritys, and therefore will still get his reducation :']

They're just being nosey - what if you were going abroad traveling/emigrating ;);)

As to your unclie I'm fairly sure that you don't count towards his council tax in any way whatsoever.
  • Students are exempt but only if everyone in the household is a student. If it is one student and one non-student then your uncle will get 25% off, which is what he will be getting now as a single person so effectively his council tax will stay the same.

You will need a letter from your University though as other posters have mentioned.
  • Technically, the council tax wont increase for your uncle! You should also be able to get a council tax exemption certificate or letter from your email before you start. Just contact the uni and tell them you need the tax exemption certificate for your uncle to produce to the council offices. He just then needs to go to the council offices so they can copy it and record it on his records. May be worth you going with him as I cant remember offhand if you will need to sign confirmation that your a student living with him or not!
