My toilet was slowly overflowing i.e the water got to a certain level then
v-e-r-y slowly stared overflowing into the overflow pipe. I mentioned this at work and with some guidance I turned the water off (on the stoptap below the toilet) changed the washer and hey presto it was fine that evening and overnight - no overflow - nothing. I felt very pleased with myself (didn't even know there was a stoptap under the toilet prior to my little DIY lesson!) Anyway my son flushed the toilet the following morning and the water continued to rise until it overflowed (into the overflow pipe - not over the floor) straight away, not even slowly.
Can someone tell me where I've gone wrong. Has the overflow fairy been been overnight and sabotaged my DIY? What can I do now, apart from ring a plumber.

Whoops, pressed the wrong button - I didn't actually mean to thank you for having any overflowing cistern!
Anyway, most valves are adjustable, so try adjusting it so it shuts off earlier. However, once float valves start doing this they very often need replacing. You can try repairing them, but personally I don't think it's worth the bother.
As you have already changed the washer, it would not be hard for you to change the valve - especially if it is top-entry one. They only cost a few ££'s.0 -
mine does this sometimes, I put it down to bigger than usual poo:rotfl:
anyway, where's this valve at again?:D0 -
I take it the float can travel up & down in the cystern without hindrance.
Have you put a water saver in the cystern and it is stopping the float from operating correctly?
If necassary a new float is pretty easy and cheap to replace so dont worry, it ain't serious."Unhappiness is not knowing what we want, and killing ourselves to get it."Post Count: 4,111 Thanked 3,111 Times in 1,111 Posts (Actual figures as they once were))Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.0
