Dad's laptop has Norton Preinstalled - how do i get it off?

Options
Hello,

is it just a simple case of going to add and remove or do I need to do something more complex to make sure it's gone. I've never used Norton but I've heard all the horror stories and I am wanting to put AVG on it. Thanks

I removed Norton from my PC with the add/remove programs. I then was able to install Avast anti-virus with no problem.

Some people have had problems removing it with just the "add/remove" programs entry. I presume that is why they provide a removal tool?

Download and run the Norton Removal Tool

It removed it from this laptop nicely it seems. :)

Personally I've always been very happy with Norton. My Dell came with it pre-installed with a 'lifetime' of free updates, and it's never given me any problems, but has certainly found a few nasties over the years.

Since it's presumably a freebie, you could just leave it installed but turn off the realtime protection, effectively disabling it but leaving it on your PC in case you ever change your mind and want to use it. You can then install an AV program of your choice. Obviously you should never have two AV programs live at the same time.
