Getting GCSE Maths for free

I was chatting to a friend who is taking A Level Maths (he is 58) and I asked how much his course cost as I want to do GCSE maths this year (it's 130.00)

He said not a lot as he is doing it using older text books and just putting in for the exam which doesn't cost a great deal.

I have now decided to do this and wondered if anyone could point me in the right direction of which books are best (publisher)?

Do you have GCSEs or higher already, Gangstabird?

If not, then you would not pay tuition fees anyway.

This does not apply to your friend as he is doing a level three qualification.

I used Letts (sp?) study guides to get me through my GCSEs - I had an A in maths :)

as bestpud said above GSCE equivilent for Maths and English is free for Adults who dont have those qualifications.

Have a look on THIS site.

Its skills for life, its a scheme run by the Government and can be done at a number of local centres.

    Good Luck

I have 8 O levels around b-c grade including mathematics. Embarrassingly I cannot remember lots of it and want to re educate myself, mainly for helping the children with their homework.

I thought that actually studying for an exam may prompt me to keep going, if you know what I mean.

Some colleges do offer the Maths GCSE free to anyone, not just people who do not have a level 2 qualification. It really depends on the college, my local college does not offer the Maths GCSE for free to everyone whereas a college about 20 miles from me (so still quite local as I drive) offer it for free! I think that all you would need to pay for is the study materials such as revision guides but when the time comes you could always go to your local libary to get the study guides and just keep renewing the book. It's prob best that you get the latest revision guides just to be sure.

Check your local colleges, although studying at home with a revision guide is just as good if you can commit yourself to keeping up, sometimes it is better for some people to go to college to get the motivation to work towards the exam.

If you need any more info let me know, I have done a lot of research into this as I was looking at re-sitting some of my GCSE's.
  • Sorry for Hi-jacking this thread but Lucky can I ask a question?

I want to re-sit my GCSE English and Maths ( English this year, Maths next ... ). I have looked into many ways and have come to the Conclusion the easiest way for me would be long distance with ICS, This is due to me not really being able to travel somewhere to go to evening classes due to me living in the middle of Nowhere! Have you researched into doing GCSE's by home learning? if so, do you think its a good idea?
