Getting tax credits am I entitled to help with uni fees?

Hi there, I hope somebody can answer my question as my uni cant!!
I have been doing a long distance Bsc course for 2 years now and am now in receipt of working family tax credits, it suddenly dawned on me that I used to know someone who went through uni as a mature student and never paid a penny in fees. I am due to re-enrole for next term and am desperate to find out if I am entitled to help with my fees - if so how do I apply??? I have contacted my university but they say unless I have a student loan I cannot get any funding!!

You have to get a loan to pay the fees and also a loan for maintenance generally before you can get the maintenance grant, which is NOT for fees, I think.
Also to get any ALF the emergency funding that uni's have, you ususally have to take advantage of all the loans on offer first as well.
If yo don't want to worry about paying back the loan, then take it and stash it in an high interest savings account and pay it back when you're done.Noli nothis permittere te terere

Pre 2006/7, people on a low income could get their tuition fees paid but this no longer applies unfortunately.
You would more than likely get the maintenance grant but, yes, you do have to apply for the full loan package first.
If your household income is lower than around £20k (very roughly) then you will get the full grant, which added to the uni bursury would be enough to pay your fees.
I think you would have to take out the tuition fee loan though, and then pay it off with the grant. Please someone correct me if I am wrong on that!
This all depends on whether this is your first degree though, ie you haven't had student finance in the past?0 -
OP, are you studying part time or full time? If part time, most of the above will not apply.Gone ... or have I?0

In that case, here is the information you need.
Up until 2004(ish!), part time students could get full fees paid, but then the system changed. There were transitional arrangements for those already studying, but you would not qualify under this provision (I imagine that everyone covered under these arrangements would have finished by now).Gone ... or have I?0 -
I've answered this on the Student Board.davidsonsl wrote: »yes, I am studying part time and long distance.0
