When I save internet pages into my favourites the 'e' icon changes to one ascociated with that website, but then the next time I start up my pc the individual icon is lost. How do I get them to save?

Assuming you are useing Internet explorer then it stores these favicons in a tempory internet files folder, so You will lose them when you clear it out.
Firefox dosn't do this but if you don't want to change then there is a little program called FavOrg which will store them for you and I think let you make your own.
