Overcharged Overseas

Just really after any advice here, if possible. Myself and my Girlfriend have just returned from the South of France where she used her Credit Card at an Esso petrol station. It was an un-manned petrol station - where you insert your card and pin details into the petrol pump. She inserted her card, followed the on screen instructions and we filled up to the total €21.00, but was unable to print a receipt as the machine was out of paper. Upon returning home and checking her credit card online, she found she'd been charged £97.00.

This afternoon she went to Barclays to find out where the £97.00 charge had come from, which they traced back to the Esso petrol station, but without a receipt they can't really do anything.

As you can imagine, she's pretty upset about this and could really do without this, especially straight after being away, so I was just wondering if anyone can offer any help or advise?

Thanks
Simon

Hmmmmm ! Without proof, you're going to struggle with this one.

Have you asked Barclaycard to confirm the exact transaction details from their encryption systems ? It will show exact times the pin was entered, whether the pump closed the transaction at £21 or not, what time the transaction was concluded etc. It may shed some light as to why the difference ?

What car were you driving ? The majority of cars won't hold £97 worth of fuel, explain that to Barclaycard when asking them to look into it.

Whatever you do you're going to need to write to them to make it 'more' official.

Give this Government half a chance and it won't be long before they do in the UK.
  • Having checked with my girlfriend, it was actually a Barclays Current Account that she used to pay for the fuel, which I'm sure will make reclaiming the money even more difficult. She called Barclays and they said they can trace the receipt when she gets her statement.

We were travelling with friends, and they also filled up to the amount of €23.50 and were also over charged at £106.00 - so this clearly isn't a one off error. Fortunately he used a HSBC credit card so he has slightly more cover.

She's also going to get in touch with our travel insurance company to see if she has any cover through that.

Any further advice or help would be appreciated.

    Thanks
