No it's not. You can see exactly how big everything is. Your just exaggerating.

Food production costs go up. Something has to give.

Next time I buy something with 25% extra in it I'm going to expect the following headline from the Mail:

Supermarkets 'cheated' as supermarket brands upsize - so you pay the same for more! :D
    The man without a signature.
  • I'll admit that food prices were rising less steeply than most other living expenses for years, so one could say getting cheaper in real terms (and sometimes even getting cheaper in literal terms thanks to supermarket price wars). If food prices had been rising steadily along with everything else then today's food prices would seem reasonable, but the trouble as that instead of a proportionate steady rise we've had cheap food for a long time then prices have suddenly shot through the roof within the last year or so.
I think the most extreme example of product shrinkage as an alternative to per-unit price increases is probably Wham bars. When I was a kid, they were genuinely quite big, and cost only 10p. About quarter of a century on, they still cost 10p. They never overtly increased the price at all, but the sweet is a tiny fraction of its original size.

Consumers describing themselves as being 'cheated' is far more pathetic! You can see the size of something. Some of the examples you posted in the other thread were wrong, I did comment on that at the time.

As I've already mentioned this is consumer lead. Consumers complain more when prices go up than when an object comes in a smaller packet. Consumers only have themselves to blame.

The main point anyway is food is less than half the price in real terms now as it was 30 years ago. People don't realise how cheap food has got but them describe themselves as 'cheated' as soon as something has to give. See perfect example of 'pathetic'!

This isn't new - it's been going on for years.

Crisps, biscuits, bread, sweets, tinned food, frozen food, soap, shampoo etc etc

Especially wagon wheels - they're tiny these days;)

I've been an on/off fan of cadbury dairy milk, the supermarkets used to sell 200g bars for 80p then cadbury the health scare and over night the supermarkets put the prices of these bars to £1.30 while reducing the price of their own brand chocolate to 70p for 200g. Then cadbury's did 25% free offers, so 250g for £1.30 while supermarket brand reduced to 175g.

Now they have a special offer of 230g bars for £1

It has been going on. but its been done sneakliy, for example we purchased a box of 6 fish portions, supermarket own brand, the product disappeared for about a mth, then returned with 4 in the box, no cheaper!

This isn't really sneaky though, as it's quite clear how many you're getting for your money.

Same with anything really. My mars bar is now only 58g (used to be 65g???), but at 50p it still tasted yummy, and still worth it :)

If they didn't write the weight on the packet, THEN it would be sneaky.

I don't think food is particularly expensive really. Not if you plan your meals and cook everything from scratch.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
