Yeovil - dish the dirt please!

Anyone have any knowledge of Yeovil and the surrounding area? Looking to rent in a cheap but nice area ( as just starting job so money tight) - may go for lodging first but need somewhere where a) my car is safe parked out in the road at night (relatively safe as nowhere is 100%) and where I can drive or walk to/from town centre work.
Any useful snippets welcome.
Thanks,
Holly

Yep. Yeovil is commonly nicknamed Yo-vile, Yawful and Yobville by locals ;). But I think its a lot better than it was say ten years ago. A good line to London, lots of lovely places nearby to shop/visit (and if you want to commute) live and a decent rail link to London(and cheap coach to Hammersmith nearby). Bristol/Bath about 40/45 minutes by car. There is a cinema (I live about 30 mins from Yeovil but its my nearest multi screen cinema) and a leisure centre and a smart gym. There is at least one nightclub, lots of takeways if thats your thing (relatively notable in this area!)

Very personally I wouldn't choose to live IN yeovil, but there are worse places in the country. Its not got a hugely illustrious residential area...by the nature of the geography and type of post war town it is (largely bombed in the war due to proximity to Royal Naval air base) most 'upper middles' tend to commute in from local villages or weekend in pretty out side villages.
  • Of course, Yeovil is the home of the greatest giantkillers in FA Cup history.

There are many nice areas and some to avoid. I prefer the surrounding villages.

    Where will you be working?

Hey, GG...didn't know we were 'neighbours' ;).
  • I agree with GG and lost inrates...........loads of lovely villages just outside Yeovil.

But Yeovil itself is ok too it is not a large town but it has a ski slope:cool: Areas to stay away from near Westfield secondary school......

All the best in finding somewhere...;)

I would agree with other posters that Yeovil is Ok but surrounding areas are lovely. (some really expensive though) We are about 5 miles outside Yeovil. It has a good shopping area but like everywhere else it has its problems with youths up to not much good. I love the surrounding areas though, some stunning scenery around and good places to visit. I moved down here nearly 5 years ago from up north and have always found people really friendly and welcoming.

I don't know Yeovil that well but I have a friend who works there and he chose to live in one of the villages not far away rather than live in Yeovil itself. There's lovely areas around it!

But none of the villages are within walking distance of the town centre ;)

Depending on where you work, even the railway station can be a bit of a hike.
There are some really quite "rough" areas (I'm trying to find an acceptable way of saying the opposite of posh without being un-PC :rotfl: ) and there are posh areas too.
  • I would not recommend living in Yeovil itself but there are lots of lovely villages around it. Mudford is right on the outskirts and is OK, Marston Magna and Queen Camel are prettier and also not far away.

    Surely it is 'unposh'.

Yeovil is not huge! I agree about the railway station (especially yeovil junction rather than Pen Mill) but what about those villages up around the Dorchester road....(can't remember if they are the Cokers or rhe Chinocks or what)? They would be long walking distance from the centre. Then Montacute village would be again long walking distance/very short driving distance, and thats quite 'posh'.

Agreed there are some pretty gruff areas from what I have seen...and the huge 'park home' area opposite the Morrisons always astounds me but despite not being a picturesque place its not so bad a town is it? In fact, to me, possibly because of the age of the majority of the town and the cinema and pizza it reminds me of a middle of the road small American town :o (including the main sort of ring road which does make pedestrianism unappealing)
