A colleague at work has recently been told that if you have paid 40 years of National Insurance payments, then you no longer have to pay. He has been working full time for the last 48 years and can't seem to find out whether this is correct. Can anyone shed any light?
Debt at worst: £33000
Debt now: £0, (Ok, a £650 overdraft)
£3000 Credit card (aiming to get this down with 0% card)

It is not correct, if you are working you will pay NI regardless of how many years you have paid it
The 40 years relates to if you are unemployed, retired etc then 40 years gives max qualifying time
NI not only pays for pension of course, it also goes into other areas, such as healthWhen an eel bites your bum, that's a Moray0 -
unless you are over retirement age (currrently 60 for women and 65 for men) and you are working then you need to pay NI.
the 40 years payment means you will qualify for max state pension (reducing to 30 years after 2010)0
