Thanks for that, I will disconnect all of the other IDE devices and do a complete install again.

That is what I had planned to do anyway, as there is not a great deal on the PC.

All data is safe on the other IDE drive and is also backed up on an external drive.

Just make sure that when you reconnect the other drive, you put it on another IDE channel or have it as slave to the drive you're installing on otherwise if it's a higher priority, the computer will look at its MBR first and try to boot off that.

    No probs, will do.

The current "D" drive is set to slave, and the new "C" drive was set to master, so why it decided to call it "N" instead of "C" was strange.

The new 500GB "C" drive is faster and bigger than the old one, and the existing 160GB "D" drive will hold a mirror of the "DATA" folder from the C.

The old 160GB "C" drive will be formatted and put into daughters PC.

If the new drive had already had a primary partition on it when you put it in the computer, it would have been assigned C: but as it didn't and others did, that's why it got put down the list.

    Anyway, have fun :)

Thanks for info, all sorted now, nice clean install of XP.

Activated again ok as there was only a minimal change.

Updates, AV suite etc all going on.

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
Out of intrigue did it recognise the full 500gig drive?
Some of the larger drives i've used were almost 'split in half' and I had to use a program to find and partitian the rest afterwards
