I need a free web host & website builder...any tips?

Options
Hi all,

I'm going to be starting up a new business venture soon (making corsets and other goth designer stuff) and will need a free webhost and website builder.

There seem to be loads out there but I wondered if anyone here had any personal recommendations or ones to avoid.

I dont need anythin super flash at the moment, just the ability to put up photos, text etc but would like something that I can customise as far as possible.

All guidance is much appriciated :o)

Cheers xMKx

You wont get anything good for free.

if it wasn't against the rules I would give you a link to my business...

Do you have any knowledge of PHP, SQL, HTML, CSS etc?

With free hosting, it's always riddled with adverts, unless bundled as part of your ISPs package, then it's non too reliable.

You wont find any professional website designers/builders for free... you can get free WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editors but they dont comply with XHTML, add extra code, make the website slow bulky and non search engine friendly.

You would be better off spending a few hundred quid on a professionally designed online shop, a few quid a month on hosting and a tenner a year on the .com domain name. Especially if its for professional purposes.

Not the answer you wanted I know but hopefully some advise you will look at and think on.

i'm going to second what RichPyke has just said..

if it is a business you need it looking professional, so a domain name, advertless hosting, and it will be less stressful to get someone else to do it..

again, the rules of this message board prohibit me from giving you my business details, but hey ho.. .

IMO, a basic shop, some standard pages etc, domain name and hosting, could be done for around £200

I am also with RichPyke and markymoo on this one.

It's especially important for a business to have a professional looking website. It's not that hard to put together something yourself with all the tools that are available but it's not so easy to make it look professional.

Your customers will judge your business by your website. If your site looks untidy and unprofessional then they'll think the same about your business. It's even more important if you're running a shop on your site as the perception of security when giving payment details will be greatly influenced by how professional looking it is. If they don't get that warm fuzzy feeling that their credit card details are safe then they'll not buy from you.

If you choose to get a web designer to do your site for you then ask them about a Content Management System. This is essentially a framework that your web developer can put together for you that will allow you to update and manage your own website content.

    Hope that helps.
  • Thanks guys, I think I may take your advice and pay for a professional sevice.

If any of you would like to PM me with your business details then I would have no objections ... assuming it's allowed :o

    Thanks again,
