how do you take pressure out if its too high, take some waterout of a radiator?

Relieve the pressure via a drain-off valve. In the event that you don't have one, you can use a radiator air screw but this is a bit messy.

Never, ever use the pressure relief valve, you may find that it won't close properly and you will be forever re-pressurising.
  • Ok, thanks for the replies...looks like there's a leak then!

I had the very same problem ongoing for around 2 years - and the boiler was only 3 years old when it started.
The boiler was frequently cutting out due to a lack of pressure and needed to be 'topped up'. Looked everywhere for evidence of a leak, but to no avail. I thought I was going mad, and several engineers later, with almost all of the components in the boiler replaced, an engineer finally identified the cause - a split in the diaphragm in the compression tank.

One new compression tank later and the boiler is running sweet again - haven't needed to top it up since.

And after all that, I was quite pleased I had the British Gas annual service package, which picked up the cost of all the (unnecessary) replaced parts and labour.

That's about the easiest problem to diagnose as the symptoms are obvious. Dunno why it took several engineers to work that one out.
