What do we need to do next - regarding extension?

We want to put a small extension on the side of our house, behind the garage. We wrote to the council and they confirmed that we don't need planning permission for it just building regs, So what would you say is the next step we need to take to getting our extension done.

We had a builder round yesterday who will be phoning with his quote on Wednesday and we will be getting a couple more quotes, but in the mean time do we need to get some plans drawn? Do they need to be drawn buy an architect?

The extension is basically 2x4m with a flat roof and then taking out existing wall and putting in an RSJ. DH is going to do as much of the ground work and interior as he can but a builder will be doing all the brick work/floor etc.

Can anyone advise on where to go from here.

You don't necessarily need plans - there are two ways to get building regs approval. The full plans route or the building notice route.

Speak to the builder who's providing the quote. For a small jobbie, the notice would be OK. Having said that, for future reference and for for future buyers it can be handy to have the plans - but it's not essential for a small job.
