Thanks Maelstrom, my previous post crossed with yours just before mine.

I checked the polarities and they are OPPOSITE! The laptop's is +O-
whilst the sound machine's is -0+. It seems I was lucky last night that it worked at all !!

I have seen the universal adaptor "endings" you have shown and my confusion gets deeper and deeper.

Best is to get the supplier's advice. They may just send a new damn thing altogether.

Thanks for the link to Maplin but I would not know what to do with all those different plugs etc. I really need to have it done for me. I won't have time to go to an electrical shop until the end of next week, which is all rather disappointing.

Still, I have learned something new about adaptors, plugs and how to hope for the future. :o

The adaptor from Maplin comes with instructions but if you're happier to contact the manufacturer then thats fair enough, and of course it won't cost you any money which is the way it should be! Just hope the new one they send you is more reliable than the old one :(

Just wanted to thank again all who have advised me as above.

Today I had some unexpected free time and managed to get to a Maplin. so I got a plug/adaptor of the required type, and the staff patiently explained to me how to set the correct polarity.

The sound machine is on now as I type and I my brain is getting a wonderful noise of a gentle lake shore surf with lots of crickets and the odd bull frog. It's so relaxing I think it's one of most worthwhile purchases I have ever made. At bedtime I shall put on either a heavy rain or the sound of the Niagara waterfall.

    :T

LOL scheming_gypsy! A CD is not the same as this programmed sound machine, because the machine plays ad infinitum and there's no CD to wear out etc. Also, this machine has many other sounds that can be mixed and matched to produce any natural environment I wish. If I want to be surreal I can put gulls with crickets!

No, the sound is different and perfectly continuous.

As for frogs and crickets... my mum's cottage in Italy is on a hilly side with a stream down below, and there's plenty of these creatures on hot summer nights... and a pleasant din of cicadas during the day...
