Boarding School Kit Insurance

I currently have a daughter in Boarding school and last year (her first) she had loads of kit and personal items either stolen or damaged. Does anyone know of insurance that will cover her whilst she is at school as it is getting very expensive to keep replacing stuff. It is bad enough covering the bit the MoD doesn't as their rates never seem to keep up with the boarding school putting up their prices and she is not in a top boarding school. I would love to know which schools they use to obtain the mean as they must be much cheaper than hers as the rate has just increased but I now have to find another £44 per term on top of the £669 I already had to find!

I know many may not approve but she has started secondary school and I owe it to her to give her the best education possible as the state school system does not have the ability to make sure all schools cover the same topics at the same time. I know this from bitter experience and fighting the DoE when my son changed state schools he ended up covering all the topics he had previously done and missing others. So I had to put him into boarding school (the same one as his sister is now in) this week will tell if it has been worth the financial hardship as he receives his GCSE results!

It is not ideal but she does enjoy it (most of the time) and I have considered moving her but other parents have similar problems.

Any information gratefully received.

Hi, we have a son at boarding school also. He has come home with half his sports kit missing but a load of other peoples bits and pieces. I washed and returned them so hopefully his will turn us as well. I would imagine the cost of insurance would outweigh the cost or reoplacing the items lost though. I have never heard of this type of insurance but maybe HIVE could suggest something?

Possibly not very helpful, so I apologise if not.

I was a forces brat (went to boarding school) and I have served in the forces.

I was made to replace any lost items myself (harsh?!) or do without. It taught me very quickly that I had to take responsibility for my own things.

ask the boarding school our daughter starts next term and there is a scheme with the school that for a small fee (4.25) a month it gives insurance for her belongings in school.
  • The school our daughter goes to automatically puts this on the bill. Its with HSBC.

There is personal belongings cover and also accident insurance.

We have opted out of the accident insurance as its a waste of good money we found out after breaking her nose!

We've learned the hard way. She doesnt take much personal stuff with her apart from her DS and a battered old mobile phone. But I have found that most things go missing during the day during school hours and not in the boarding house!

As for PE Kit thats always a nightmare!

The BSA goes up in conjunction with the rate increases in fees anyway each year. The UAO will be notified about this - although I am not sure how that works now with JPA coming online but I would have thought it would have been available on there.

If you wanted a separate insurance, we have found that approaching our Kit Insurance company helpful too.
