Combi Boiler Recommendations

Options
Hi

I will soon be moving into a 3 bed house that currently has a old system boiler.

I'm going to get the whole of the old system drained down and removed as well as removing and scraping all the old rads.

This will give me time to get most walls skimmed then I will be installing new more compact rads in all rooms up to the existing pipe work.

Once this is done I will be getting a new combi boiler fitted.

What sort of rating of boiler will I need to cope with the demands of a 3 bed house?

Does anyone have any specific model or manufacturer that you think is good quality?

Many Thanks in advance.

  • if you're on benefits, tax credits (above a certain amount) or are disabled, did you know that you could get a free energy saving combi boiler installed under the warmfront scheme? If you're not maybe you could get some sort of grant from the government towards maying your new home green, ie, solar panels, insulation in loft and possibly for your boiler. I'm not sure but it's worth typing 'heating grants' or something like that into google.

We had the conventional boiler changed to a combi, and while i appreciate they are more efficient, we do not think much of it. We are in an older house, which is probably a bit bigger than the average. The boiler is in the back kitchen, when we turn on the hot taps, both in the kitchen and the bathroom sink upstairs, you need to run off a lot of water before it gets hot. We have not got a water meter, but if we had, i'd be annoyed at the thought of wasting this water.
If we try to use the bath, the pressure of the water means we can fill it at not much more than a trickle. We had them back several times when it was first fitted and they said it was working ok, and no more could come out of the boiler and get upstairs. The upstairs sink is ok because only a little water is needed to fill it, in comparison to the bath.
If you are going into a flat you may not have this problem.

    Hi

Personal preference is Vaillant or Viessmann.
You are looking for the best flow rate you can (at least 12litres/min) This equates to a higher k/w output, for example Glowworm 30 cxi has a 30k/w output to hot water.

So if you buy a nice cheap Worcester junior @ 24k/w you'll get a rubbish flow rate.
Possibly why Sailor Sam has a problem.

You need a good water mains flow /pressure as well.

We have a Ravenheat boiler, i can't see any model number. Is this a good or bad one, do you know ? My mum had it fitted, it was her house before mine. She was entitled to one of those grants, is it Warmfront ??, i know she just took what they sent her.

With the grants you get a cheap ,low proformance boiler.
The companies doing the grants want to make as much profit as possible.
Their attitude is you are gettng a new boiler for free, so dont complain.
