Ok, so it's never going to be quite as good as it sounds, BUT.....
At the moment lots of companies are conducting their 'Milk round', that's where they go round various universities and hold events for penultimate and finalist undergraduates to talk to them about careers etc. If you are one of these students, I highly recommend going to some, because they also remarkably give away food/drinks/freebies too! E.g. Last week I went to a L'oreal presentation at a swish cafe/restaurant in Oxford, put my hand up for a question and won a goodie bag with mascara/perfume/shampoo samples/moisturiser in, they gave away samples of moisturiser for everyone, there was free wine and orange juice, pizza, nachos, dips AND you actually get to think about a career with them, which can actually be quite good. Now, I'm not promising anything here, and I know for a fact they're not all as good as that (I went to a Proctor and Gamble evening at the careers service and it was literally just a presentation) BUT if they sound like a freebie giving company (consumables) then it might be worth a look. I'm not sure how many uni's do this but I think it's most of the big ones. For more info on when/where the events are, sign up for your career service news letter and book yourself into some. The worst that can happen is that you learn about a new profession you knew nothing about before! Get started soon, as it's mainly done in Michaelmas (Xmas) term.
Have fun! I'm looking forward to the Mars one....

Another good way of getting freebies is to go to career fairs, i went to one organised by my uni, got a big mug, a personal fm radio, lots of free sweets and a heap of pens. They may advertise it as a graduate fair, but anyone can go.Sometimes i surprise myself by being right.0

Agree with Mattjimf, grad fairs and careers fairs are even better than Freshers' Week for freebies. Some of the big ones even reimburse transport costs!!
http://www.gradjobs.co.uk/ is a big one - they were at the NEC last week.0
