Spanish Satellite TV

Moving into the oxford area to live with partner, who is Spanish.

Want to buy a satellite system so that she can watch Spanish programs and sometimes i can watch my English language programs.

Havent really got a clue what we need, all i can say which spurred off our interest is that the house we are buying has a larger than average dirty looking satellite dish at the back of the house and cables coming through wall where tv used to be!
So think i just need a box?Motor??
Have found this link, but will it allow me to watch english type channels

  • I think you need to have it pointed at hotbird 13° or you can have tvcint at 19.2°
an 80cm dish should do with a digi box preferably not a sky one.
if its only free to air ones your afte wait till lidls has the digi boxes and dishes, lnbs in stock if your a diy'er all you would have to get then is the cable.
£100 odd quid should cover the lot.
    Cheers

    buenos tardes !

if you want a subscription channel you need to have a digibox with a cam slot
    obviously a tad more expensive

Sorry for sounding stupid, but what is a digi box, a freeview box or a satellite reciever that you put cards into that then decrypts the signal like a sky box with your subscription card

If it is a freeview box are you saying i point my dish at hotbird, connect it to my normal freeview box and i will recieve free spanish channels like in uk

You need a proper satellite receiver - not a Sky box or Freeview box.

LIDL sell cheap ones or you can pick one up fairly cheaply from a number of places:

For a few free Spanish channels, the dish needs to be pointing at Astra 1 which is 19.2E. This satellite group also has a large number of channels from other countries as well. You may be in lucky in that the dish is already pointing to Astra 1:

    TVEi
    TVCi
    Andalucia TV
    ETB Sat (Basque)
    TeleMadrid
    Galicia

My brother-in-law (and his sister) are Spanish and live in the UK and both have basic satellite systems pointing to Astra1.

If you want a larger choice then Hispasat at 30W contains the most Spanish channels but a lot require a subscription to view:

    Thanks

You'd need a PowerVu decoder for those channels & they're about as common as hens teeth.
The only PowerVu recievers used in the UK [that I know about] are Scientific Atlanta ones used by bookmakers for the SIS racing service & Reuters television for the stockmarket.
Even if you could find one available, they're very expensive & it would need over the air authorisation from the broadcaster.
  • Adding to this thread even further....

What do I need to get a motorised dish?
Want to watch the Free-to-Air channels on SKY plus want to be able to scan for other channels on other satellites.

Will be istalling this DIY style

    Thanks

If you want to buy everything in one go this looks like a reasonable deal
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TECHNOMATE-1500-CI-FULL-MOTORISED-SYSTEM-WITH-90cm-DISH_W0QQitemZ260007112490QQihZ016QQcategoryZ96970QQcmdZViewItem
Ideally you could do with some sort of alignment meter, I would guess something like this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Electronic-Satellite-Finder-Satfinder-Sat-Finder-Meter_W0QQitemZ130012964108QQihZ003QQcategoryZ4693QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
    should do the job [eventually]

I prefer the Technomate receivers as they are very well supported
DIY is fine as long as you take your time.
No. 1 rule that cannot be broken for motorised systems is - the mounting pole/bracket MUST be 100% vertical

    mcfisco, thanks for your advice
Wondered if your post for ebay item would serve my purpose, as want to look at Hispasat 30W and motorised so it then looks at Astra (19.2°E) (is this possible)

Then just need to get someone to fit and its done
    Cheers
