Credit Card Cheques Query

I've taken up a Capital One card with 0% on purchases until October 2009 to spread the cost of some work on my home with the intention of paying off in full before the end of the deal.

However, for the major purchase, windows, the company levies an extra fee for use of credit cards which sort of defeats the object. I'm also going to be using other tradespeople who don't take credit cards.

Plan B is to use the card for all my other purchases and then pay for the work by cheque/debit card.

However, I was wondering if I could ask Capital One for credit card cheques.

Does anyone know if credit card cheques still attract a fee from a company that doesn't welcome credit cards - or are they just the same as other cheques?? And are they still 0% if the credit card is?

Well MINT do issue Credit Card Cheques that can be paid into a Bank Account at Balance Transfer rates.

However, I suspect that Capital One do not, the chances are that if they did issue them they would accrue interest at an extortionate rate from day one.

If you have an Egg Money card you could use this a mule to get the funds from Capital One into your Bank Account.
  • Before you issue a cheque BEWARE - using a credit card cheque does not give you the additional protection that you would get under section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act.

So if the firm doing you windows goes bust before the end of the warranty what would you do?
Pay by credit card and the credit card company becomes jointly liable.

Thanks for this but I'm aware of that. The company is long established, has a good reputation, has all the relevant accreditations and is personally recommended by several people which is why I've decide to use them. I'm not concerned with the additional protection afforded by use of a credit card on this occasion.

My original post may have been misleading. I don't want to use my card as a 'mule' to get funds into my bank account and I don't want to apply for additional cards.

I don't want to sound ungrateful but I would SOOO appreciate it if someone could answer my original question. To put it another way. Do merchants incur a charge for credit card cheques like they do for normal credit card transactions?

the company you are paying doesn't pay any fee.. from their point of view the cheque is just a cheque.... you may well have to pay a fee however.

OK as you have requested a specific answer to your original question.

The Credit Card cheques do not attract a fee from the retailer in the way that a Card transaction does.

They are not necessarily 0% even if the card is.

    Hope this helps.
