Pre Pay Gas Meter Problem
Hi,
We have a pre pay gas meter fitted and each week pay back a little debt to our supplier, however we have just returned from a week away and discovered that the meter went down from £3-4 ish to £0.41p then an hour later it was on £0.33p?
Now the only thing on is the pilot light so I can understand it would take a small amount but over £3 in a week? almost 10p in an hour?
Is this right or do you think we may have a leak/faulty meter?

There are 2 reason this is likely to have happened, one is the amount you repay every week (you dont say how much) and two is that some tariffs have a standing charge which is taken every week regardless of useage. Hope that answers your question.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

Hi, thanks for your reply.
The amount we repay is £10 and comes off on a wednesday as a one off amount.
we have not been told about a standing charge but would that come off a bit at a time like I said? It seems to be losing about £1 a day but at the rate of 1p every 10 mins or so?
Surely a standing charge would just come off £1 a day or whatever?

I dont know for gas meters but the newer electic prepayment meters take the debt and standing charge at very small intervals (every 5min?) so you wouldn't see it drop suddenly by £10 (if that was the debt rate).IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

Ours comes off over night on a tuesday, I think it may be to do with the pilot light, I think our old boiler may not be too cost effective...0
