Abbey - Basic Account

Hi,

I went BR yesterday and began to worry about opening a bank account as co op application was referred. I read on this forum that someone got an Abbey National account so I thought I'd give it a try.

I called them, told them I am BR and they said they don't run a credit check for the basic account. So I went to the branch today and did the application over the counter, told them I am BR and they said that I'd know the decision later today. I called them and they said it'd been accepted. I won't believe it until I've got it in writing.

Has anything simular happened to anyone recently?

Thanks.

I will be interested to see if goes through lisa. I had a joint basic account with abbey but had to get my name removed a couple of days before bc as i was told they would freeze the account. Good luck, perhaps with the amount of bc they have decided to change their policy. D

  • This does look as if it's good news if all goes OK, thanks for posting Lisa, the options for BRs could do with a nudge from some other banks.

    Good luck

I'll be waiting to hear your update too, that would be great if Abbey was BR friendly, but I don't think they are.

well...they refused me back in March last year....since they've been taken into the santander group things have been more difficult with them...I honestly do wish you all the luck in the world...just dont count on them offering you an account

All Abbey bank accounts are processed using the same system which includes a credit check. The difference with the Basic account is that it has no credit facilities so as a result is considered a less risky product.

From memory the only way you can get an Abbey bank account without a credit check is on the back of a mortgage. If you get approved for a mortgage Abbey consider you a safe bet for a bank account which is not unreasonable.

I was told if we had been long standing customers of theirs then, they MAY have let me keep the joint account, but seeing as we had only had it about a mth they said no way andthat was their basic account!D

The problem is like many other banks...they promise the world & in the end you usually get nothing
