laptop wont shut down

hi i cant seem to turn my laptop off when i go to turn off computer after pressing turn off the computer does not close down but goes into end programme runs through cycle when end now or cancel comes up the programme will not end and computer will not shut down and programme information says search glow and its taking over ten attempts to close it down can anybody help? thanks

Nice punctuation! What operating system? Does it shut down if you press the power button for ten seconds?

phew I out of breath after reading that!
As said above, hold the power button down to force a shutdown. try ctrl alt del and access task manager, and use end process tree on the program thats causing you the trouble, then try a clean shutdown.

not sure wot you mean by operating system yes if i hold on the power button for 10 secs it does close down
