advice needed please

Backgound - I was made bankrupt by a creditor in April 08, Yorkshire Bank allowed me to keep my bank account.

Problem - I went £18 overdrawn for approx 9 days, this month. As I sold something on Ebay last week I withdrew the funds from my Paypal account to the Yorkshire bank account. This payment entered my account on friday morning and as of 6am my online balance was £35 in credit. Finished work at lunchtime and went to the shop and my debit card was declined, so I walked over to the ATM typed in my pin and it swallowed my card, the screen read ' your card has been retained at the request of your bank '

I called yorkshire bank there and then and was put through to my branch who said my payment from Paypal had been returned, she did not know why and said my card was retained because I tried to use it whilst overdrawn.

I went home and logged on and yes the Paypal credit was showing as a credit and then a debit with the comment 'unpaid'. Once again I called my branch who said it was nothing to do with the Bank and call Paypal. She said the only time credits are refused on an account are if it is frozen and mine isn't.

I called Paypal who said as far as they are concerned the money has been paid into my account successfully.

I then discovered , after the branch closed that all my standing orders and direct debits have been cancelled.

So to me this is starting to look like my account is frozen or stopped, but Yorkshire Bank staff appear to know absolutely nothing about it. What do you think ??

I am starting to get really stressed out about this as my wages are supposed to be going into this account on Wednesday. I have absolutely no money from now until pay day and if I can't get my wages on wednesday I don't know what I will do.

Any thoughts or advice would be really appreciated

thank you

yikes padiman, i can understand your worry. i can't really help i'm afraid, but just offering a word of sympathy and support till a wise one happens along.. even if the branch is closed could you call customer services and hassle them to hell until they sort it....?

Yes i called customer services last night when i noticed that all my direct debits and standing orders are cancelled. That confirmed to me that it was the bank doing all this. They said i need to call my branch as he can't see why its happened. Had a letter of car insurance people this mornin dated the 14th saying my direct debit has been cancelled. I have had no post from Yorkshire bank.

If your branch knows nothing about this i suggest you or they call the head office. I was told by my local abby that whilst they may allow me to keep my account open once bc, quite often head office would close it. I am affriad it does look like they have closed it but 4 mths down the line is a bit harsh. You need some answers and fast.D

  • I think the best thing to do would be to look for a new bank account as soon as possible - don't know if the Co-op line is still open - 08457 240 752 for a cashminder as it's Sat. If not tomorrow or Mon.

The next step is to let your DD and Standing order people know there is a banking problem and you're sorting, and see if anything can be done about your wages - will your employers help at all with a sub and withhold for the time being? Might be impractical I know.

I suspect that the overdrawn situation may have alerted the Yorkshire bank HO and the problem has arisen from that.

All the best, thinking of youxxx

I think this is another example of being told by a bank that its okay to keep your account then it being subsequently closed. I'm sure you will be able to get your wages out of the account but if its not too late, can you have them paid elsewhere? I hope Yorkshire Bank haven't been charging you as well.

I don't think you'll get much more information talking to the branch. I've been going round and round with Lloyds so know how you feel. If it was me I'd just open a new account and move on. You'll never get a satisfactory answer anyway.

Good luck and if you have any trouble with your wages, perhaps your OR can tell them he's not interested in the account.

hi ya thanks for the reply, the OR wrote to my Bank in the first week of being made Bankrupt, the branch manager initially stopped my debit card. After a conversation with me in which he wanted to clarify a few things he then called the OR to get the full picture ( the OR told me at interview he was ok with me having the Yorkshire Bank account for purposes of paying in wages ) . After he had spoke to the OR he decided I could still keep the account open and ordered me another card, which duly arrived and have been using this account since April 2008. I am very interested to know what exactly is going on, I am resigned to the fact I won't know this until I call my branch Monday morning.

That same experience has been echoed on here many times padiman. Very few people get to keep their accounts. It seems banking staff don't know the rules although they convince you it is okay to keep your account HO close them in over 95% of cases. If it was me, I wouldn't bother trying. Let us know how you get on though.
