xxbutterflygirlxx wrote:I picked up my fruit and veg from the food co-op today (£6 for about a tenners worth in Tesco), lovely stuff, really fresh. In the salad bag was something that might be new potatoes or sweet potatoes. They look like elongated new potatoes, a bit bumpy and some bits have a slight pink tinge. They seem to be washed as they aren't muddy - the ordinary spuds were muddy. They look like a cross between the two - anyone know what they are likely to be? I wouldn't know what to do with a sweet potato!
sounds like sweet potatoes
are they orange or white inside?
the white sweet poatoes aren't that great but the orange ones are gorgeous and can be used in a savoury fashion or better still as a sweet. you can make sweet potato pie (follow pumpkin pie recipes) or mix them up well, add butter and brown sugar add walnuts then put marshmallows on top and put under the grill til the marshmallows are browned, gorgeous stuff, quite common at american thanksgiving dinnersfounder of Frugal Genius UK (Yahoo Groups)0 -
As stated earlier they are Pink fir Apple Tatties -Gorgeous cooked in their skins and served cold as part of a salad
As a total aside I was shopping in Morrisons earlier today when this young wench sidled up to and said "Asparagus" So I looked her over (as you do) and said "Yes" She said "What is it"? I said it is a veg-et-ab-le She said "What does it look like"? So I explained the relevant physical expectations of the aforementioned veggie and went off with her to find some. The next question was "What do you do with it" I replied "eat it" - then came the obvious "How do you cook it"? So i went through the typical rubber band fried or boiled bit (I prefer fried in butter - but I'm messy) It was like the lights had just come on! There is hope yet for the younger generation!
That being said what is the purpose of Okra and why do Globe Artichokes exist at all?The quicker you fall behind, the longer you have to catch up...0 -

not sure about artichokes but okra is heavenly when dipped in egg then rolled in flour mixed with cumin, salt and chili powder

Okra is georgeous when it's cooked right I think. I've had some pretty tasteless okra and if that was the 1st time that I had eaten it, I would have been put off for life.
A friend of mine makes lovely okra and my mum does too.0 -
My one and only meeting with Okra was a disaster it was like eating snot and as for Globe Artichokes - by the time you have removed all the inedible bits there isn't really any edible left is there? You scrape the eatable bits off with your teeth then you have to floss for ages - and you are still hungry. For the life of me I cannot see why they don't sell them as thistles LOLThe quicker you fall behind, the longer you have to catch up...0
