Advice TV Aerial

Hi All,
Have set up a lcd Digital tv with built in freeview in my son's room. He had a portable before with a bog standard aerial that sat on top of the tv and picture was ok.
switched it on and picture is not that good,with the old aerial it is not much better and that is bulky.It is not picking up the freeview with that aerial either.
We have sky downstairs and an aerial coming into livingroom through the outside wall and we have a fantastic picture.
What are the options without spending alot, we thought about getting an extension from the lounge tv aerial but it would mean tacking a wire all the way up the stairs etc.
