hi there got the cpu out but do you think I would be better of just replacing the motherboard and cpu in 1 unit also if I replace it all will I still have to reinstall my OS as I need stuff on the hard drive and dont realy want to do that.Are all motherboards the same ,ie will they fit my case,or do I need to look for one the same as in it

Chances are you wont be able to get the same one as you remove, they get out dated quickly and ranges change every few months.
Depending on the age of your computer its likely to be an ATX or mATX (micro ATX) board. You'd need someone to confirm that for you to ensure any thing you buy will fit.
If changing board and CPU you will likely also have to replace the memory, once again dependant on the age of your kit.
Have a look for bundles (memory, cpu and board) you know that they all compatible with each other then and you can get some good deals.
It maybe worth looking for a board with integrated graphics, will save you from trying to fgure out if your card will fit your new board. You shouldnt pay much more for a mainboard with integrated graphics. (though, if you a big game player integrated graphics arent the bset for that).

*Edit. Ive changed boards a few times and not had to reinstall windows, buts its not guarentteed that it will. Quite often windows will pick up the new hardware and may ask you for the drivers.
