Cheap divan base?

Keen to buy a Sleepeeezee Touchpocket 2000 5' mattress.

Unfortunately have checked existing bed (very cheap and nasty 5' divan + mattress) and the divan base is sagging, so I probably should get a new base as well.

The mattress is £510 online, which I don't have a problem with, but a 4-drawer solid divan base is going to cost £335, which seems to me to be outrageous.

http://www.bedstar.co.uk/shop/catalog/Sleepeezee_Touch_Pocket_2000_5ft_Divan_Bed-p-27047.html

When I looked at the bed in the shop the mattress co-ordinates nicely with the base, but when you're using it it's going to have sheets on, so it doesn't make any difference which base you have!

Any thoughts on cheap divan bases?

    Hiya,

Have you thought about your local freecycle for a base? I've just given away a really good condition king size base on mine the other week and since then there has been a few on offer of various sizes. Even a brand new king size mattress.

Worth a try, and would save you some money to boot.

I tried a dozen or so in the shop and I liked it best.

And from what I've read of your very helpful posts, it's a good design (pocket spring + memory foam).

Yes pocket sprung and memory foam is a good combination........but this one is Sleepeezee, who are one of the big brands that often cut quality in order to reduce production costs. Even if you look on the Sleepeezee web sit it fails to mention the density of the memory foam, which is a good indicator that it is lower than recommended.

The 2000 pocket springs are also above the number I would recommend. If the number of springs is too high, then each individual spring has to be so small and weak that they get damaged easily. I usually recommend between 1000 and 1800.

Also this mattress is a non turn. I know it is very difficult to find 2 sided memory foam mattresses, but if you can find them then it will last far longer.

Then there is the very very high price for the base:confused:

To be fair, there isn't a realistic difference between 1800 and 2000. If it were 3,000 I would see your point....

They seem in rather short supply as you say, and I liked this style; wouldn't want to buy without trying.

Indeed, I've decided that it's a rip-off so I'm just ordering the mattress and am going to get a leather bed separately.

1800 is the upper limit that I recommend, you have to have a limit somewhere. At 2000 springs you will have to really look after it to make it last, especially as it is non turn so you can't turn it over.

I know exactly what you mean. However trying it out in a shop only gives you a very rough idea. You really need to sleep on a mattress for a few nights to really decide if it is suitable.........have you checked to see if bedstar will take it back if you don't like it? Otherwise I would find another outlet that sells the same mattress, and will take it back.

Actually I'm not going to buy from there. They are cheapest for the divan but not the mattress.

These guys are cheapest for the mattress

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250175277842

I'm not sure about the returns policy:

If you wish to return your purchase and receive a refund please notify us within 7 days of receipt. The item must be unused and unopened in the original manufacturers packaging plus repacked in our protective carton. The purchaser will be responsible for all carriage costs associated with returning the item. All products will be fully inspected upon return and a refund issued less any return carriage costs due. We prefer to collect using our own carriers but all products shall remain the responsibility of purchaser until they are received at our distribution warehouse.

It doesn't seem like you could try out a mattress and have it still unused. Presumably they come wrapped in plastic?

Actually the same company seems to operate four or five different websites, clever marketing I guess:

    http://thesleepshop.co.uk/
    http://www.beds247.co.uk
    http://www.mattressmagic.co.uk
    http://www.bed-world.net/

For some reason beds247 have a more generous returns policy

You have a 14-day period, after the delivery of the goods to return your order. If you decide to take this option you must contact The Sleep Shop to arrange a collection date. However, you will have to pay a collection charge if you decide to return any goods. Until the goods are collected you must keep them in good condition in order to receive a full money refund. Refunds will be made within 28 days of The Sleep Shop receiving the returned goods and having inspected them to make sure they are in the same condition as when delivered to you.
*Products cannot be returned if the customer has used the goods. This does not affect your statutory rights

Still not sure what they mean by having used the goods.

I'll call them tomorrow and find out (they appear to be beds 9am-5:30/7, rather than 24/7)

It appears that they won't let you try it out at all.

I've found the same mattress cheaper:

    http://www.ukbedsonline.com/products/product/moredetails/special.id174.html
    http://www.bedsdirect.com/product/Touch_Pocket_2000_mattress-21013
    http://www.mattressland.co.uk/productdetail.asp?val=products&typeid=83&pro_type=&id=732&cattype=1&itemID=76718

However I still think it is a lot of money for a Sleepeezee.

Any idea on style, budget, and does it have to be genuine or would you buy a good quality faux leather?
