Virus and Rebooting Problems

Options
This morning I had an email come in with a virus attached (Trojan Virus downloader). I think I caught it immediately as I got a virus warning and did an anti-virus scan (AVG 7.5) (twice) but it seemed like it was still there.
My pc worked fine apart from me wanting to get rid of the virus. I downloaded AVG 8.0 and it installed successfully and required a reboot. However on restarting, it got on to the windows welcome page and moved from that page and now all I have is a blank blue screen. Any ideas on why it is doing this and what I should next?

I can't afford at all to pay for a techie to look at it, but will have to if need be. I am writing this message from our laptop which thank god we still have but it means I can't access any of my files that are on my desktop.

Any online help would be greatly appreciated. Please.:o

UPDATE
A message flashed on the screen saying unexpected kernel mode trap and that windows has shut down to prevent internal damage! Now I am really scared!!!!

First of all, see if you can start your computer in Safe Mode by re-booting and tapping F8 as it restarts.... use the arrow keys to highlight Last Known Good Configuration, and then press ENTER.

If that doesn't work, try here.

If that doesn't work, let us know.

Hi Donnie, I tried Last Known Good Configuration and thought it was going to work but it is now back at the blue blank screen.
I wasn't even able to do a system restore because all I have is a blank blue screen. Any other ideas? BTW, I really appreciate your help.

Thanks for your replies. I couldn't open my pc at all in safe mode so I had to pay for a techie to come out and look at it. With the compliments of my credit card that is as I had no money to pay him. He backed up all my data and took it back to factory settings and it's fine again now. Apparently the virus that came in on an email messed up my pc but at least it didn't destroy it completely.
