Cheap Insurance for New Driver

Hi All,
I am sitting my driving test soon and once its passed(note the confidence
) I will need to get a car.
I would only ever consider buying 2nd hand butbefore I commit myself to anything I need to find out about insurance.
Does which type of car I have affect insurance costs? The size of the car? I have 3 kids so need something big enough for them but NOT a people carrier etc. Something with 4 doors and a boot will do me. How about my age? I am 25 but will be 26 once I've passed. What about engine emissions, does that count towards it?
I HAVE NO IDEA
Any ideas/suggestions of where to look?
Thanks in advance,
Allison.

Hello
I too am soon going to be taking my driving test and I am 26 at the moment.
I have two children and have been looking at cars / insurance for a few months now.
I was looking at a second hand car and the insurance in most cases was pushing £3000 for TPFAT, my instrucor told me of the pros and cons of a used car (hatchback - being the most popular for new drivers), high mileage and problems start, putting your hand in your pocket and payong for MOT's, alright alot of negativity but all the same you could be unlucky.
I started getting qoutes on a new car and Comprehesive cover was £1000 cheaper, after alot more searching and trawling the internet the cost kept coming down, when Tesco quoted me £1200 I was sold, a new car, no MOT, no problems or straight back to Ford.
Last Tuesday I picked up my new car and and got 7 day drive away cover for free, but I still thought there must be a better deal out there, I rang Pru this morning and they quoted me £1005.48, I couldn't believe it.
I am on a provisional license and only got it in May this year so I think this is fantastic.
You are best to do quotes on differant types of cars and weigh up if you can put your hand in your pocket if needs be, just compare prices and find the best for you.
Hope this helps
BTW my o/h uncle worked in fords for all his working life, this means a discount for him and his family on new cars. I saved over £3000 of the OTR price, so I think I have done some good money saving and got myself a nice little investment!
Good luck and don't give up, I thought to myself I am willing to pay around a £1000 and I would not rest till I got it,(ford wanted nearly £4000), just think of what you want and how much you want to pay and then get clicking or dialing for big savings.:happyhear We are not put on this earth for ourselves, but are placed here for each other.

Sorry never answered your question, the smaller the engine the cheaper the insurance, avoid black, the premium jumps up with this colour, modified cars against manufacturers standard bumps it up as does alloy wheels, where you live, where it will be kept, the mileage you expect to do, The list can go on and on, like I say just get online quotes for differant cars and see what you are looking at paying.
The money suermarket and have you been to https://www.2pass.co.uk ? there are forums on the site and guidance for insurance. Alot of the time you get the same companies coming back with quotes and can vary a few hundred pound, the time of day when you enquire and when you want cover to begin are also factors in your premium.:happyhear We are not put on this earth for ourselves, but are placed here for each other.

I don't know if they still do, but often magazines like what-car have lists of cars and their suggested insurance group at the back. The lower the better! I think a Ford Ka is as low as it goes, but I don't know what is more your size.
Also, check to see if anyone gives pass-plus discounts ... you can often get the equivalent of 1 years no claims bonus for taking a few additional lessons (motorway driving and the like).
Check to see if any dealers (Citroen used to do this) give away one year's free insurance. Even though you have to buy a new car, it can be suprisingly cheap if you take into account you are effectively getting £1200 off the final price.
Also, if you have a partner, try getting quotes with them on the insurance too. Having a woman on the policy can do amazing things to the price (even if she doesn't have a full license!)
