question/advice about changing fire

Options
we have a coal fire in the lliving room with a back boiler for the central heating, i think its a rayburn...it has been in for years, but when we moved in about 14 years ago we had to renew the flue, and we have put a new front on the fire, to give it a modern look.

what i was wondering as the price of coal is going up, and in the summer when the fire is out we have allways got the emersion on for hot water...

i was toying with the idea about changing it to a multifuel type fire, so we can burm wood as well, which we can get hold of loads for free.

how much would it cost, and could it be done ?

someone did tell us if we removed the throat plate in our fire we could burn wood, but i am not to sure about that,

any advice suggestions, to help us look into it a bit more would be appreciated.....

thanks....
