Help For Mature Student On Tax Credits

I Have Just Accepted A Place On A Nhs Radiography Course Due To Start In September, The Course Has A Means Tested Bursary Which I Hopefully Will Receive . I Work Part Time And I Receive Working Family Tax Credit And Child Tax Credit As I Am A Single Mother. I Wish To Keep Up Work As It Is 18 Hours A Week And I Feel I Can Manage Both.
Will My Bursary Affect The Tax Credits I Receive.
Also What Other Help Will I Be Able To Get Being A Lone Parent And Being A Student
Thanks In Advance For Any Help.

  • Your bursary doesnt count as income for tax credit purposes so you dont need to decalre it.
If you have childcare costs you should make sure that you are only claiming from one source - TCO or local education authority.

If you receive housing benefit then your bursary counts as income for this.
Also if you are a full time student then you will be exempt from council tax but you need to let them know.
Any other help available to you depends on which country you are in.

Don't know about tax credits but the student loan counts for HB. If a student loan is available and it affects benefits, you don't really have a choice about taking it out. You'll be assessed as having taking it out whether you do or not.

  • No neither of these is counted as income for tax credit purposes (and neither would the student loan).

*Could you please stop using the caps at the start of every word, it makes it a little difficult to read.
  • Thanks for the replies, I have applied for the bursary and today I have applied for the non means tested student loan . I know that I am late in applying but hope it wont be to long before I hear. I have just one question which I hope someone can help me with, on the student loan form it asked if I wanted to appy for the special support grant should I have put yes . I was unsure as i know i will get the nhs funding so thought it would be the maintainace loan I neded to apply for. I hope somene can help thanks
