    Actually, if I remember correctly, the DWP will help you purchase a new cooker (or other such "essential" items) should yours blow up. They do this by awarding you a crisis loan or grant.
    That has to be paid back of course, my sisters blew up and it took them over a week to sort her a loan out and she had small children. So i save now for such events!

    They do this by awarding you a crisis loan or grant.
    They only offer loans now where your benefit is reduced accordingly. AFAIK only those leaving care get grants these days. Much better to save prior to your cooker blowing up and be prepared for it, than have your cooker blow up and have to have less money each week.
