I Need Help!

Hello All,

I need some help....
When i was younger (17, 18) i got myself into a bit of debt on a Nationwide overdraft and thus had my mobile phone contract (orange) withdrawn.
I had to cut up my debit card and now only have a cash card (although i can still have direct debits and standing orders on it).
I am now 23 and finding that i am constantly getting turned down by both Nationwide (even tho i still have 2 accounts with them) and First Direct when i'm applying for a Debit Card. I don't want/need an overdraft and do not understand why i am getting refused.
I'm in a good job, pay rent, and have debits for home phone, mobile, and broadband all paid in full and on time. I looked at my free Expirian report and nothing looks out of place.
If anyone can help me understand why i keep getting refused or how i can better my score, i would be grateful!
Cheers

I wonder if it is because you have a cashcard account and not a "full account" with cheque book and cheque guarantee card? My husband found that changing his current account to "full" status (every though he did not need the cheque book etc, made all the difference. This might be true for you?
Debt September 2020 BIG FAT ZERO!
Now mortgage free, sort of retired, reducing and reusing and putting money away for grandchildren...
  • Yes but Nationwide will not upgrade my account nor will they open a new one for me....

Have you tried seeing an advisor at Nationwide and talking through the problem? Of all people they can see how you’re currently managing your money.

I’ve been with them over 20 years and they are usually very approachable. If that doesn’t get results I’d write to Swindon putting your case in writing, saying you’re loathe to move to another bank etc, etc…
  • Cheers, i'll give it a go. Although my local branch (lewisham) never seems to have anyone at their desk, just at the counters..

Just phone them for an appointment with an advisor.
  • I'll give them a call. I was thinking about applying at Natwest but as i've been declined twice in the last 6 weeks, i don't want to apply again as it will just bring my credit score down.

Unless there’s something terrible you’re not mentioning, I reckon Nationwide are being very sniffy with their refusals. Just be 100% honest in a direct discussion with them. As I said before, they of all people can see how you’re currently managing your money.
