Hi All
Firstly, I am sorry if this is the wrong place - feel free to move.
Not sure why I am posting, maybe for advice if anybody has been in my position or support - I just need to get this written down as I am really scared!
I had my smear test results back a couple of months ago with an abnormal reading, the letter advised to have another test in 6 months. In the mean time I have been bleeding between periods, had terrible discharge and am so tired all of the time. I am going to see the doctor this evening but I am really scared about what he is going to say.

The two things might not be connected - if the smear had shown something serious enough to cause your symptoms, I wouldn't have thought they'd let you wait 6 months.
I hope this doesn't count as medical advice - I'm just hoping to let you know that the worst case scenario isn't always the most likely! Good luck tonight *hug*My TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j0 -
Try not to stress out and think that there is something wrong.
There might be or might not be, but you seem to be getting upset over it which will upset the body balance.
You know you'll have to do another smear today, and god forbid if the worse comes to it, i've had 2 aunts both under 50 who have had cervical cancer and both successful with treatment.Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?0 -
Aww big hugs to you honey. As Frivolous Fay has said I would have thought they would get you back straight away if it was anything to be really worried about, but hopefully the doctor can investigate your other symptoms and put you mind at rest.
If it's any consolation I know a few people who have had abnormal smears and it's turned out to be fine after a follow up.:DYummy mummy, runner, baker and procrastinator0 -
It may be possible to get an STI screen done at the same time as your smear. I would ask about this, as your symptoms could suggest something of this type (and can also cause an abnormal smear result). If it is an STI, don't worry, the great majority are treatable with a short course of antibiotics.
Hope it all goes ok xGone ... or have I?0 -
Hoep you get on okay at the docs tonight, given how smear tests are done (i.e. scrape away cells) I would imagine it is possible that you have got a bit of an infection from or following it.
My friend had an abmormal smear and they re-tested her every 6 months for 2 years, but it never came to anything. As I understand it (I'm not a medical professional) a smear can be disrupted by plenty of things, so try not to worry too much. x0 -
People do regularly get abnormal smears for no good reason - apparently even a little blood on the smear can have an effect. So don't get unduly worried, it's not uncommon. And even if there were to be a problem eventually, you would have caught it in loads of time for treatment etc.
On the discharge etc, i don't know if you saw the tv show about embarassing illnesses the other night but there was a woman having similar problems to you. Turned out she was over-washing and removing all of the good bacteria from the vagina. Just mentioning it in case in your worry you might have been doing similar.
But you are going to the right place to get help. Good luck!0 -
Good luck with your appointment, try not to dwell on it before you go.
Keep in mind that by 'abnormal', that - in the majority of cases - means cells which will one day cause a problem. Very rare for it to be cells which are already causing a problems, so try not to stress because if it is anything requiring action, they should have got it in plenty of time.
And like others said, it could well be an STI or other infection - esp. if the repeat test is for 6 months and not ASAP.
Best wishes0 -
I have a family member who had an abnormanl smear and didn't go back for a 6 month check. Anyway her next smear 4 years later was again abnormal and she has just had very minor treatment for CIN1 cells. So that shows that even with 4 years gap didn't do too much harm so I would think you are OK as you have had a check so recently. Although, it is always better to get things checked - even just for your peace of mind - as your imagination will always think the worst!!! Good luck:rotfl:0

Many thanks for all of your kind words. I am a worrier by nature so when something like this happens it scares the life out of me!! I am going to try and keep calm and see what the doctor says this evening, I will mention the STI test to him too although I don't think it would be that but I suppose you neve know.
Thanks again to all of you and I will keep you posted.

Hi, just wanted to say, please make sure that you attend all check up's following an abnormal smear. many of my friends have had abnormal results and on their next check up everything has been fine.
I had an abnormal result, unfortunately mine was CIN III but i have had treatment, and have my next check up next week. Fingers crossed!!!
regarding the STI check, according to my GP, most smear tests now include a quick check for chlamydia too.
Discharge and bleeding between periods really could be could be anything, Including stress over your last result!!! I wouldn't worry too much about it being connected, but do get checked out just incase!
hope everything goes ok.0
