Netgear dg834g and AOL

I've just bought a wireless modem router (the one above) and it seems to be 'locked' into AOL.I use Orange.
When I insert the setup CD it asks that I log onto AOL Broadband which, of course I haven.t got.
Is there any way of using this modem or is it permanently locked into AOL ?

Hi, have you bought this second hand? There is a reset button on the rear of the router that will reset it back to factory set up,this will then clear out the settings in the router and allow you to put your Orange settings into it. If you go to this web page you will be able to download the user manuals to tell you how to do this.

    Hope this helps.

From memory I think you may need to hold the reset button in for about 5-10 seconds

    You do.

But the name Netgear just gives away the biggest problem with that router. Send it back and get a good make (Netgear/Linksys/Belkin = poor routers in my experience)

You may also be able to log in to the router by going to http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1 or something like that (it generally says in the instructions), which will give more options than the CD does probably.

    Yes but no luck yet.
HOW do I set up this modem without the CD ? Do I need to rest the modem to the factory settings ?

if its a genuine netgear 834g you should should have no problem using it for any isp.
hold the reset button (at the rear) down for 10 seconds.
enter the router setup page and enter your details etc.
you dont need to use the isp setup cd.

some netgear routers were supplied by sky etc.. these are locked to the supplier.
(they can be unlocked by flashing the firmware).
    Get some gorm.

I've reset the modem but can't get onto the setup page at all. I've looked through the manual which I downloaded whilst using a wired modem and can't find much help there. Do I need the Smart Wizard cd ?
