Housing benefit?

When my H finally gets out of the house, will housing benefit help towards paying the motgage or is it just for rent purposes?

Housing benefit only covers rent, but there is a possibility of claiming mortgage interest from Income Support.

I have only answered your post above. Housing benefit is only paid for rent. If you are paying mortgage interest then you may be able to claim from Income Support.

1st of all you need to give us a lot more information..
Are you employed or do you live on benefits?
How much is your outstanding mortgage and what term is left on it?
Is the house in your name or your husbands name or both?
To your original question, no HB does not pay your mortgage.
So he has been advised to continue paying the mortgage, not legally obliged?? Can he afford to pay for this mortgage + somewhere for himself to live + support himself??0 -
ISMI example
£750 mortgage
£500 of this is interest to the bank
£250 of this is repayment
ISMI will only ever cover the £500 portion, you will have to find the other £250 by yourself in this example.
This is only if the mortgage is in your name solely. If the mortgage is a joint mortgage, you will only get 50% of this award so £250 of the £750 paid for you.
There is also a 9month wait before becoming eligible for this.0 -
The house is in both our names as is the mortgage. Currently paying £425 which includes £25 arrears. Not sure what the interest or repayment split is - will call and find out. I don't thin he can afford to pay for the mortgage and get himself a flat or a house - he will have to house share for a while - bt thats his problem.
Could we sell our house to one of those companies that allow you to rent back your house?

This is one of those situations that makes not a lot of sense. You have a smaller mortgage than many people's rent but won't get HB even if fully on benefit as you would if only renting. I am in the same situation-my mortgage is only £600 pm and is a lot less than rent in my area yet cannot get any help,and cannot sell as my delightful ex took a large loan out against it without my knowledge. I could end up losing the house and renting,will then get HB help but it would cost the govt more and my kids would lose their schools etc. Perhaps your H will help for w while and give you some respite. You can get help with interest only once you have been on benefit 39 weeks,but I reckon most people would have been evicted by that time!Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it!0

So your mortgage amount will be based on £400pm. I'll hazard a guess to say it will probably be a £250/£150 split. (interest/repayment)
Meaning after 9 months you will get roughly £125 of your £425 mortgage paid for you. This is only if you have not already been evicted by then, as for the 9 months you'll have to find the whole £425 yourself, and even when you do get the ISMI can you afford the remaining £300 yourself??
If he cannot afford to pay both, then i find it highly unlikely he will continue to pay for the roof over your head
Being advised is not the same as being legally obliged. If he cant afford it, he cant afford it.
That will then be your problem, not his as the house is in both your names.
No, you cannot claim HB for a house you have previously owned within x amount of years so the buy and rent back trick would not work here.
The best bet is for you both to sell the house, split the profits if any 50/50 and go your own seperate ways. You will then be able to claim HB/LHA on another rented property.
I dont see any other way personally.0 -
House has already been on market for 6 months - no one is buying because of market- only way to do it is to drop price really low but then will have nothing left over as we already have charging orders on the house!!
