Investment help

I am recently divorced, paid off all my credit card debts and now want to start investing. I have a cash ISA with HSBC, but I'm looking to invest about £1000 / Month (hopefully 10 year investment).

I also want to invest for my children (currently aged 4 & 6) for their education (probably about £100/month each).

I have trawled through many posts and read some positive reviews regarding fidelity network and Moneyspider and from Sunday Times suppliment. I am not to keen on IFA's (some bad experiences) and looking for a system to manage a portfolio of diversed funds. I would like a process that will allow me to check (or receive regular feedback) on performance and switch investments etc with relative ease.

I am a complete newbie to this site, and would welcome any suggestions from anybody.

Many thanks
